Tattoo Aftercare Guide: Healing Ink Like a Pro

Everything you need to know to protect your tattoo — from fresh to forever.

Healing Timeline

Immediate Aftercare (First 24 Hours)

1. Leave the bandage on

Your artist will wrap your tattoo. Leave it on for 2–4 hours (unless using a second-skin bandage like Saniderm — ask your artist for specific instructions).

2. Wash your hands — then your tattoo

Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free antibacterial soap (like Dial Gold or Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented). Gently pat dry with a clean paper towel.

3. No lotions, creams, or ointments yet

Let the tattoo breathe overnight after cleaning. Do not rebandage unless instructed.

Ongoing Aftercare (Days 2–14)

1. Clean 2–3 times daily

Continue washing with mild soap and warm water. Always pat dry — never rub.

2. Apply a thin layer of aftercare product

Use artist-approved moisturizers like:

  • Hustle Butter Deluxe

  • Redemption Tattoo Aftercare

  • Aveeno Fragrance-Free Lotion
Apply just enough to moisturize — not smother.

3. Expect light scabbing and peeling

Don’t pick or scratch! It’s normal for your tattoo to flake like a sunburn. Let it do its thing.

4. Wear clean, loose clothing

Avoid tight fabrics or dirty environments that could irritate or infect the tattoo.

Note: Deeper healing can take up to 6–8 weeks, especially for large or color-heavy tattoos.

What NOT to Do

• Don’t soak your tattoo (no swimming, hot tubs, or long showers)

• Don’t apply petroleum jelly (it clogs pores and can trap bacteria)

• Don’t use scented lotions, alcohol, or peroxide

• Don’t expose your tattoo to direct sun

• Don’t rewrap it unless using medical-grade second-skin

Long-Term Care Tips

  • Always wear SPF — UV light fades tattoos fast

  • Moisturize regularly — hydrated skin holds ink better

  • Touch-ups — consult your artist after 6–12 months if needed

  • Watch for signs of infection — redness, pus, or fever? Call a doctor.
